Ryan A. Contreras (b. 1996) is a Mexican American photographer and filmmaker living in Los Angeles, a city his family has called home for five generations.

Inspired by his family’s deep connection to California, his photographic work explores encounters of place – intersecting history with personal experience. His photographs depict natural and human affected landscapes as well as sites defined by predetermined boundaries, place based memories, and historical significance. By spending extended time in his subject areas walking, writing, and photographing, he uses the camera not only to connect with land but also to reinterpret what is seen.

His work has appeared in Lenscratch, F-Stop Magazine, and Zone Magazine, as well as in a group exhibition at Candela Gallery in Richmond, VA.
